Why it’s important to walk with like-minded believers
I find it interesting some of the synonyms for walk are lead, usher, shepherd, steer and guide. So my question for you today is who is guiding you? One of God’s greatest gifts are the people we get to walk alongside in life. With that said, I’m going to tell you why it’s important to walk with like-minded believers.
I believe that when we allow ourselves to be accountable to other believers, we can expect them to guide us according to scripture. And ultimately, that’s what we want, right? We need to be challenged to grow in our faith and when a believer shares biblical advice contrary to our own human-ness, we have the opportunity to grow in the likeness of Christ. Now this certainly doesn’t dismiss the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. But if we are not being filled by the Spirit, inspired by the Spirit & surrounded by the Spirit, then let’s examine the contrary.
There’s value in being wise with whom we seek advice from & whom we surround ourselves with. We need people in our lives who will lead us according to scripture opposed to worldly advice. People who look like Jesus, not the world.
I’m not saying don’t associate with non-believers or talk to them about anything personal. I have plenty of people in my life who are not living Holy Spirit led lives.
What I am saying is that some of us are too comfortable where we’re at and we need discernment with how the world is affecting us.
We trust our unsaved parent/sibling/friend & we love them, so we confide in them, but they’re not leading us to Christ in our situation. Instead perhaps they’re validating our pride and worldly decisions. We don’t want people who will agree with us and make us feel better about our choices. We want people who will challenge us to take it to the cross where we know God will rid us of ourselves.
Benefit of walking with like-minded believers
The definition of like minded is “having a like disposition or purpose; of the same mind or habit of thought.” The definition of a believer is “one who gives credit to the truth of the Scriptures, as a revelation from God; a Christian; one who receives Christ as his Savior, and accepts the way of salvation unfolded in the gospel.”
There’s something really special about a brother or sister in Christ; meaning a fellow believer. Before you even get to know one another, you already have something in common. What better a thing to bond over than our faith?!
I recently saw an Instagram post @chelseektruth_2 that said:
“Sit with Bible believing Christian women. The conversation is different.”
Yes, it is! And I believe it’s crucial for spiritual growth; at least it has been for me. So many other Christian women have inspired me on my faith journey. Women who have been at it longer than I have & can give me the reflection of Jesus, not of this world. Women who are more mature than me who I can bend their ear for wisdom.
We live in a dark world, where evil is called good and good is called evil. That’s why we need to surround ourselves with friends strapped in the armor of God. Who will pray for us behind our backs & who will encourage us in The Word of Truth.
When you are “like-minded” you are of one mind in the sense that the Word of God is your truth, it’s your bible. It’s the lamp unto our feet and the light that guides our path. We read it for wisdom and understanding. The Holy Spirit guides us in truth and discernment. So yeah, I want friends like that. Sisters in Christ, children of God who can hold me accountable to the narrow path. I see the value and importance in walking with wise counsel.
Bible Verses
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. Proverbs 13:20
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
“‘And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. Jeremiah 3:15
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. Romans 16:17
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Psalm 1:1-4
It got me when you said that it is crucial for Christian growth to be with other people with the same face as you and have conversations with them. So I should start looking for a religious organization to go to and connect with people with the same principles as me. Doing so will definitely help me out in getting better in my life, especially in the spiritual aspects because I still make the wrong decisions most of the time.
