Keeping Your Faith Despite Your Circumstances

Keeping Your Faith Despite Your Circumstances

The dreaded phone call, the medical report, the life-altering circumstance that pivots your life. Most of us encounter this sort of redirection in life and when it arises, how do we respond? How do we keep our heads up, our focus on the Lord and His “plans” or “redirection” perhaps. As Christians we quickly use this terminology to make difficult circumstances somewhat tolerable. But as my family is digesting some particular news today, I can’t help but wonder “is this part of God’s plan?” Or is this just a result of an accident & now we have to choose to mope around OR accept the situation and move forward in faith? Well, I don’t know the answer to the former question but I do know that when posed with a problem or setback, we ought to move forward in faith despite our circumstances.

In life it’s probable that we have divine intervention as well as the effects of sin or accidents. As someone who believes in the Sovereignty of God, meaning that He is in complete control and has complete authority over my life, even when I don’t understand or when I cant make heads or tails as to why, still, I choose to move forward in faith.

Circumstances change, but God doesn’t change

I don’t know who needs to hear this besides myself right now, but life isn’t “fair”. We tend to feel this way when things don’t go our way; foregoing the truth that ultimately, we are not in control. And it actually usually bugs me when people say “it’s not fair” but the truth is, as Christians, we were never promised an easy or fair life. John 16:33 says: These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

As what some might call a privileged society, disruptions seem unfair and we can spend too much time trying to figure out “the why” when we ought to focus on “the who”. Why are we so attached to things of this world that will never amount to anything in eternity?

Whatever news you are faced with today, so long as you have breath in your body, you can walk in faith. You can’t control everything but you can control your response & your attitude. We serve a God who turns ashes into beauty. He can be glorified even amidst the most difficult of circumstances. Likewise, we can still be effective for His Kingdom amidst the most difficult of circumstances.
