Let your light shine

Let your light shine

There’s definitely a level of uncertainty that the darkness brings. I remember how much I hated the dark when I was young. I always had to have a night light on so I could see that the boogie man wasn’t creeping around.

Have you ever driven down a long, dark road at night with no street lights? Or walked to your car late at night in a desolate parking lot? It’s just eerie.

I find it interesting that even in the very beginning of creation when God separated the dark from the light to mark night and day – this concept of light and darkness was born. Metaphorically speaking, throughout the bible, light represents goodness, truth & Jesus and the darkness represents sin and evil things.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.” Genesis 1:1-5

A fallen world

We live in a fallen world where sin is rampant and darkness lurks. Look around, do you see it too?

The bible is full of knowledge about the darkness. I also highly recommend a book called The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis it gives insight to how the enemy lurks around us every day, like a lion, waiting to see who he can devour with lies & deception.

It’s important to educate yourself on the enemy and his tactics but this post is about the light of Jesus.

“How horrible it will be for those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness into light and light into darkness, who turn what is bitter into something sweet and what is sweet into something bitter.” Isaiah 5:20

Let your light shine

Jesus is the light of the world

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12

And when you receive Jesus, His light is within you! His light is the Holy Spirit, it’s the Word of Truth that divides the soul & spirit. His light is truth, love, peace, in it’s truest, purest form; it’s gentle, merciful & gracious. Scripture tells us not to dim that light, but to shine it brightly for all to see!

I heard a metaphor that I could really relate to, especially living in Massachusetts where the winters are long. There are those days that I’d be outside and it was cold and dreary, suddenly the sun would appear from between the clouds and it would feel so amazing, warming me from the outside, in.

That’s what it’s like to shine the light of Jesus. Have you ever met someone who radiates Jesus? Just being in their presence is like the warm sun on a cold day.

Bible Verses about light

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16

“No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house. For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.” Luke 8:16-17

Let your light shine

“I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.” Ephesians 1:18

Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless. Philippians 2:12-16
