4 effective steps to get your child to do their chores:

#1 Set very clear expectations.

Example 1: Take all the trash out. (not clear enough)

Example 2: Empty all the trash from every bathroom and take the kitchen trash outside. (clear expectation)

#2 Set very clear time limit + Consequence.

Example 1: Have X, Y & Z done today. (not clear enough)

Example 2: Have X, Y & Z done by noon OR no (fill in the blank) the rest of the day.

You’ve given (clear time limit) + if needed (consequence for not having it done by that time limit).

Most important part here. Follow through with the consequence! We can’t let our kids find a loop hole in our inconsistency because they will milk it.

#3 Teach them the value in it.

Putting value behind what you’re doing just makes it easier to accomplish.

Value 1: Many hands make for light work. Everyone should be doing their part to contribute to our household.

Value 2: Learning life skills for their future and teaching them to be independent when they live on their own. They’ll thank us one day.

#4 No (fill in the blank) until chores are done = Responsibility.

Parents, hit em where it hurts. What do they love to do? They can’t do it until their chores are done. This not only instills responsibility in our children, but also makes them gets their chores done much quicker.
