Comparison is a trap

Comparison is a trap

I would venture to say that every single person who has walked the earth (except Jesus) has compared themselves to someone else, at least once. Comparison is a trap!

I mean, in this world, how could we not? The moment we sense someone else is more excelled than us in any given area, we immediately feel bad about ourselves.

What an imprisonment we have set up around ourselves. Comparison is truly a trap that’s really been heavy on my heart lately and it’s time that you & I deflect the negative talk.

Eleanor Roosevelt said it best:

“No one can make me feel inferior without my consent.”

Comparison is a trap

Ways we compare:

  • Looks (physical appearance, height, weight, waist size, face, hair, etc.)
  • Clothes (trendy, fashionable, designer, last season, etc.)
  • Homes (size, location, decor, etc.)
  • Jobs (entry level, full time, SAHM, promotions, etc.)
  • Success (measure one another up by their success in life, likes, followers, money etc.)
  • Intelligence (level of school accomplishments, etc.)
  • Kids (when they walk & talk, what they achieve, hobbies, etc.)
  • Walk with Jesus (how we pray, knowledge of scriptures, etc.)
  • Diet (what’s in your pantry? Organic? Cows milk? etc.)

What above matters for eternity? If were too busy comparing these things then certainly our focus is in the wrong place. Trust me friends, I’m convicted as I write this.

It’s a privilege to be alive and we shouldn’t live as though we’re competing in a race. We don’t have to be “better” than the next. Be YOU, perfectly imperfect, YOU.

Comparison is a trap

God created each one of us different from everyone else. There is no-one just like me or just like you.

We have to let go of discontentment over what we don’t have and judgement towards ourselves.

We have to focus on what we do have and stand in confidence of who He created us to be.

Bible verses:

This literally might be my new favorite scripture; it speaks volumes to me! I pray this over every person that reads this & myself:

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 1:18-20

I pray your hearts will be FLOODED with LIGHT! We are HIS inheritance! That’s the legacy I want to leave behind! Did you know that God gives those who have faith the same power that raised Jesus from the grave?! What can we not overcome?!

“Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:30

Do not let your adornment be merely outward— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. 1 Peter 3:3-4

Therefore, my dear friends, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Philippians 2:12-13

Call to Action:

Will you join me in rediscovering your confidence in who God created you to be? Finding satisfaction in what we do have and break the imprisonment of comparison in our lives.

Comparison is a trap, it’s a lie from the greatest deceiver. The Screwtape Letters is a book by C.S. Lewis and it provides insight to the ways the enemy lurks around us seeking who’s thoughts he can devour to hold you down. The enemy is biblical, know your enemy.

But God.
